Un día antes

I am finishing my second year as a teacher in New York City and a couple of weeks ago purchased my ticket to San Salvador with a return ticket from Panama City. And after spending 4 hours at the Mexican consulate to renew my passport, I am ready for my trip to Central America. There is a proverb that goes something like “To not do something we can come up with a thousand excuses, but to do it we only need one reason.” I guess I came up with a thousand reasons not to stay in the US this summer, but in reality I only needed one reason to take this trip.

Last summer I took a similar trip to the Yucatan Peninsula for about three weeks and I had a blast. I somehow ended up purchasing my ticket to Cancun the day before I left and had nothing on me, but my backpack and smart phone. This time around, I am not ready to say that I am any more prepared for the trip than last time (Although Lani did let me borrow her her awesome superabsorbent). All I really know is that for the next two months I will be traveling and seeing El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

This blog, I hope, will keep my family and friends informed of where and how I am doing. I also hope to inspire people to travel and see the World and to show them that we don’t have to cross the oceans to see beauty, diversity, nature, culture, art, etc. We also don’t need to be rich and all we really need is a bit of common sense aka “precaution” and the luck of the Irish.

A couple of weeks ago I came a cross a poem on the subway. It is part of a campaign called Poetry in Motion by MTA. It inspired me and got me even more exited about my trip as El Salvador is my first destination…
